  1. Latin radius `ray' white, luminescent,
  2. metallic element, symbol Rd, atomic number
  3. 88, relative atomic mass 226.02. It is found
  4. in pitchblende in small quantities and in
  5. other uranium ores. Radium is used in
  6. radiotherapy, to treat cancer, and in
  7. luminous paints. Radium bromide was first
  8. separated by Marie and Pierre Curie in 1898,
  9. but the element itself was only isolated 1911
  10. (by Marie Curie and A L Debierne). It is now
  11. obtained commercially from pitchblende
  12. reserves in Czechoslovakia, E Africa and
  13. Colorado, USA.
